Deer Valley Middle School Title I Parent Involvement Compact

 Deer Valley Middle School recognizes that a shared partnership among students, parents, and school staff is required to maximize student academic achievement and individual success. This compact will define the roles of the school-home partnership.

Students

• Attend school regularly and be on time
• Work to the best of their ability in class and at home; ask for help when needed
• Follow school core beliefs: Six P’s of Professionalism: Prompt, Prepared, Participate, Productive, Polite, and Positive

Parents / Guardians

• Emphasize good attendance and punctuality
• Be an active participant in your child’s learning: read with your child, provide structured homework time, review student work and grades on Powerschools, visit school/teacher websites, attend parent-teacher conferences, maintain on-going communication
• Encourage your child to follow school rules, policies and procedures
• Support and attend school events (Back to School Night, Meet the Teacher Night, school dances, curriculum nights, PTO meetings, etc.)

Staff

• Provide a safe and caring environment conducive to learning
• Provide quality instruction that will promote learning and academic success
• Participate in staff school trainings that emphasize instructional excellence, school safety, teaching practices that meet the needs of all students
• Create and maintain an open line of communication between home and school
• Encourage parent involvement

School-wide Title I programs count on parent support. Decades of research show that when parents are involved, students have:

• higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates
• better school attendance
• increased motivation, better self-esteem
• lower rates of suspension
• decreased use of drugs and alcohol
• fewer instances of violent behavior

You can become more involved by:

• joining our PTO
• volunteering at our school
• attending the Annual Title I Meeting, parent-teacher conferences, family nights, and other events
• communicating with your child's teacher on a regular basis
• keeping your child's teacher informed about events in your child's life which may affect his or her performance at school

By becoming an active participant, you will:

• serve as a role model, showing your child that you support his or her education
• assure that you are aware of your child's progress, demonstrating to your child how important that progress is to you
• teach your child that your input at the school is appreciated and that you support your school's efforts

As part of the Title I parental involvement policy (Section 1118 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965), each school receiving Title I funds, develops a school-parent compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share responsibility for improving student achievement. Also, each Title I school must jointly develop and distribute its own written parental involvement policy. This policy will specify that the school will:

• convene an annual meeting to explain the Title I program
• offer a flexible number of meetings
• involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of Title I programs
• provide timely information about the school curricula, assessment data, and student achievement

Right to Review Teacher Qualifications

As a parent of a student at a Title I school, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teachers and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

Whether ADE has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.

Whether ADE has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances.

The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.

Whether any teachers’ aides or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications.

Essential Academic & Social Behaviors

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Program (PBIS) - Focuses on recognizing positive student behavior. This is done through earning points in PBIS Rewards.

Free breakfast and free lunch is a federally funded program that is provided for all of our DVMS students.

The federal funding that is provided to the school because we are a Title I school, allows for us to have additional support/programs.

The following programs are supported by Title I funds:

Read 180 & Elevate - Reading programs that offer additional support for students who are not performing at grade level, providing additional time for students to work on targeted skills needed to be successful in reading.

Academic Interventionists - Academic interventionists are available to support students through small group intervention in Reading and Math.

RTI - B - A Behavior Support Specialist (Behavior Intervention Coordinator) that is on campus that provides support to students and teachers on campus.

RTI - A - An Academic Support Specialist (Instructional Coach) that is on campus that provides support to students and teachers on campus within Reading and Math.
