Meet Principal Ray Utter
Although I wasn't born in Arizona, I grew up here and proudly call it home. Before entering education, I served in the United States Marine Corps, where I learned the importance of perseverance, problem-solving, and servant leadership. After my military service, I realized I wanted to continue serving others by helping shape the next generation through education.
My career began as an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Deer Valley Middle School. I later taught history at Sandra Day O'Connor High School before serving as Dean of Students and Assistant Principal. Returning to Deer Valley Middle School as principal has been especially meaningful, allowing me to lead the school where my educational journey first began.
I believe every student is capable of growth when they are supported by caring adults, high expectations, and effective instruction. My goal is to create a safe, welcoming school where students feel they belong, teachers are empowered to do their best work, and families are valued partners in their children's education.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our four children, exploring the outdoors, traveling, appreciating classic cars, and—according to my wife—working on whatever projects she has planned around the house.
It is a privilege to serve the students, families, and staff of Deer Valley Middle School. I am honored to be part of a community dedicated to helping every student learn, grow, and discover their potential.
